The Festo Robotic Penguin
Festo Aqua Bionic penguins
Penguins are extremely strong swimmers and can launch up to six feet in the air when jumping onto land. Inspired by the extraordinary anatomy of real penguins, Festo decided to use their advanced motion systems in the creation of the Festo Robotic penguin.
Autonomous underwater vehicles
The bionic Penguins are designed as autonomous underwater vehicles that independently orient themselves and navigate through the water basin. They are supported by a 3D sonar system which, as with dolphins, allows communication with their surroundings and with other robotic penguins – for example to avoid collisions.
The can even swim backwards!
The torso of the Festo robotic Penguin can move in any direction. Unlike real penguins, the Festo Aqua penguin can even swim backwards. We are quite impressed with these little fellows, maybe Festo will design robotic panters, or maybe flies next year.
